Hi there, A prior warning before this truly begins, I mean what I say in the title. This is not a ‘ooh La La Land is the WORST because Ryan Gosling is so hot and I love jazz and OMG a musical without a happy ending is sooo mind blowing and creative’ kind of hatred for the film. This is a ‘La La Land is my least favourite film that I have ever seen’. The only film that has ever come close to the level of hatred I feel towards this 2017 Oscar-Winning motion picture, is the Eric Idle farce ‘Nuns on the Run 2’. With this film, unlike ‘La La Land’ I find it much harder to pinpoint where this hatred comes from. The hatred I feel towards ‘La La Land’ is so intense, that I spent a good portion of my NYE this year (last year?! what do we say?) arguing with a person I had never met before about why it deserved approximately 0 awards and is insulting to the genre of Musicals, when really on NYE all I wanted to be doing was drinking Buck’s Fizz, singing badly and getting emotional about another year ending. Except, no, I view it as my civic duty to step in for ‘La La Land’s’ Offence no matter the time, event or place. My main reasoning for this hatred that fuels my soul and feeds the little devil on my shoulder is as follows; ‘La La Land’ is the most boring film ever. The music is boring. The visuals are boring. The concept of a musical being set in LA about Hollywood is boooooooooooooring. Halfway through everyone’s face starts to get boring. The ending is boring ‘wow an alternate timeline where they end up together. amazing stuff’. It is 2hrs 8 minutes of boring. Yes, it does hark back to the golden age of musical motion pictures, but it does it boringly.&nbsp;I did not connect with either of the main characters, I wanted most of the songs to be over as soon as they began (okay, I will allow ‘Another Day of Sun’ to stay, because that scene is the literal only good thing about the film in my opinion), the pace of the film is intolerably slow, and finally- wait, I can’t even be eloquent or reasonable any more – I just bloody hate it. Sometimes as humans we’re allowed to irrationally hate things – right?! Well … I do perhaps know one more reason I am bitter and twisted about ‘La La Land’ is that my favourite film of all time, also a musical, was released in the exact same year. So you can imagine how watching ‘La La Land’ get its grabby boring jazz-piano hands on all the ‘Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical’ awards that it, and my favourite film were nominated for , felt like a tap shoe through the heart. Now, dear reader, the word you’re looking for to describe me right now is bitter. And I accept that, and would even go one further – bitter and&nbsp;jaded. That I am. ‘SING STREET’ THE CHARMING COMING-OF-AGE MUSICAL COMEDY DRAMA IS MUCH BETTER THAN ‘LA LA LAND’ IS OR EVER WILL BE. IN MY OPINION. But instead of just being unfair towards ‘La La Land’, I feel that I should offer up something constructive instead of just tearing down a film that a lot of people love and a lot of people were proud of working on. So, here is my list of ‘If you like this bit of ‘La La Land’ I think you’ll enjoy this musical motion picture that I actually like’. Enjoy the genre bending music of ‘La La Land’? Enjoy that it doesn’t sound too ‘box square for your life’? Try Sing Street. Obviously my first recommendation would be ‘Sing Street’, a film that I personally cannot find a fault in. But in all honesty the soundtrack is stupendous and feels just like it could all have jumped out of the 80s. Through the fictional bands sound evolution in the film, it is fun to hear them trying out all the different 80s subgroups and genres of music. Enjoy the ambiguous ending of ‘La La Land’? Enjoyed having your ‘who-ends-up-with-who predictions come out incorrect? Well then ‘High Society’&nbsp;with Grace Kelly is the one for you! Less of a love triangle happening in this film, and more of a ‘love square’, the couples that end up together will certainly keep you on your toes. Also, Louis Armstrong! Enjoy the city setting in ‘La La Land’? Like your musicals with a metropolitan air? Then ‘Funny Face’&nbsp;is the musical du jour! New York City and Paris feature so predominately throughout that they act as an additional character. ‘Funny Face’ includes similar themes on individuality and pursuing ‘your art’ to ‘La La Land’. The iconic ‘Funny Face’ scene where Jo is posing in front of the Arc Du Triomphe with a bunch of multicoloured balloons is actually referenced in the Epilogue of ‘La La Land’! So, there you have it. The rant about ‘La La Land’ that I’m sure you’ve been waiting for. In ‘From Gemstones to Jewellery’, Barthes discusses the impact jewellery has had on man, how it has changed and the ideas that have remained behind it. <img width="1688" height="1868" width_o="1688" height_o="1868" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/05f66a41188f8a85e76758b2d3c956aee6342a825785d8d5bd7eec5f6882c5a9/blingo.jpg" data-mid="72968442" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/05f66a41188f8a85e76758b2d3c956aee6342a825785d8d5bd7eec5f6882c5a9/blingo.jpg" /> He starts the essay by talking about the ‘gemstone’, the unblemished and unadorned ‘mineral substance’. Barthes reminds us that the extraction of the gems and precious stones from below the ground, would have linked them to thoughts on Hell in past reasoning. Gems had escaped the “subterranean caverns where humanity’s mythic imagination stored its dead.” They take on a new importance as a link to humanity and the underworld – a link that we do not have to Heaven. This was perhaps a reminder that it was easier to be brought down to Hell, than to be raised up to Heaven. Barthes writes that the gemstone was a symbol of Hell with its ‘fundamental characteristic; the inhuman’. I disagree with this, as Hell is nothing if not made up of the worst of humanity, it is intrinsically linked to the wrong side of human emotions and the people who push them too far. We cannot disassociate the idea of Hell as the ‘underworld’, from the ‘bad’ people who supposedly end up there. Hell, as a concept cannot exist without people acting on their desires and ending up there, unlike gemstones that cannot act on, or even have emotions. The belief that gems came from Hell I can understand, due to the past imagined ‘geography’ of Hell as underground, but I do not believe that we can compare the two on a more emotional level. While I do disagree with Barthes on his beliefs on Hell and jewellery, I find his ideas evolving tastes in jewellery to be extremely accurate. He examines past and present (to the time of writing, 1966) views on what makes ‘good taste’ in jewellery, and comments on why they may have changed. Owning and displaying fine gemstones and jewellery was once considered to be the pinnacle of power, and thus, taste – “the gemstone becomes the very concept of price; it is worn like an idea, that of a terrific power, for it is enough for it to be seen for this power to be demonstrated.” The finer the gems displayed, the more powerful the person wearing them was thought to be. This is no longer the case, with the introduction of imitation gems into jewellery ‘saturating’ the market and effectively democratising jewellery. “It is no longer subservient to the law of highest price nor to that of being used only one way, such as for a party or sacred occasion.” I find this observation by Barthes to be cannily accurate, as the ‘maximalist’ jewellery seen as a display of power in the past, would nowadays be seen as vulgar and would instead present an idea that the person is overcompensating and is without ‘true’ power. Jewellery to display ‘true’ power would instead be understated and discreet. Through reading this essay in ‘The Language of Fashion’, it has encouraged me to think more on how fashion can be a sociological marker for attitudes and practices of the time. My name is Rachael, and I’m currently undertaking some Work Experience at Jellybean while I am on my University summer holidays. It is really exciting to be immersed in an agency totally focused on food, aka one of my favourite things in the entire world. It is a deep seated love that has followed me throughout my life; at age 5 after finishing my first term of school, my favourite subject whenever asked was always ‘Lunch’, to age 17 achieving a Level 1 Diploma in Cookery from the Tante Marie Culinary Academy in Woking (RIP). To now, doing Work Experience at Jellybean, writing passionately about the pros of grilled onions on burgers on my own blog, and having perfected the recipe for one of the greatest meals in the world… Beans on Toast. You think I’m joking. You are wrong. I recently went on holiday with my friends and threatened to leave when they all revealed themselves to be traitors, who dislike the beautiful simplicity of the baked bean. The baked bean was originally created as a cheaper, tinned version of the traditional French ‘cassoulet’ dish, a slow-cooked casserole of meats in a sauce with haricot beans. Which is why original versions contained sausages becoming known as ‘Boston Baked Beans’, and why the current American tin of baked beans still contain pork fats. The UK version had this pork removed during WWII rationing as the Ministry of Food classed them as an ‘Essential Item’ for rationing, but the porky bits much less essential. I am inclined to agree with the Ministry here, as baked beans remain an essential part of my diet. This change in recipe while very valid at the time, has now created a major international issue around the concept of ‘Beans on Toast’; the nature of what a baked bean is gets lost in translation, and whether having them on toast is socially acceptable. In America, the baked beans on sale in shops are vastly different to that of the slightly sweet, tomatoey orange beans we know and love in this country. Love so much in fact, that the UK has the largest number of baked bean eaters in the world. What an accolade! So, back on point, the tinned beans on sale in America are giving us our bad culinary rep; if I was also only faced with plain beans, chilli beans, mustardy beans or most-commonly, super-sweet BBQ beans, I too, would not be on board the ‘Beans on Toast’ express train. They are so removed from that of their Brit counterparts that American baked beans contain brown sugar, with 14g of sugars overall per tin, compared to just 7g of sugar in our UK beans. See, practically a health food and one of our Five-A-Day. This is the only valid excuse I will hear by beans on toast haters – that they have been woefully misinformed and have led a sadly sheltered beany life, only being exposed to an inferior array of beans. Or that they dislike joy. So, here are my ‘tried-and-tested’ Beans on Toast tips, to celebrate the best way to consume a proper tomato-sauce baked bean. I cannot recommend these tips for any other sort of imposter baked beans as I have not, and will not, be trying them. My secrets to the perfect Beans on Toast are: • 2 slices of toast, any type, as long as there are crusts. Only cowards have one slice of toast. And you are not a coward.• Butter. For the toast. Duh. But if you want to feel ~fancy~ pop a bit of butter into the beans while they cook. I’m not entirely sure if this enhances the flavour much, but it feels like one is making a bit more effort that just heating the contents of a tin.• Your preferred Baked Beans. I am not one to dictate the brand or specifics of the beans, as I know the international, political and societal implications of bossing people and their beans around. But they must be in tomato sauce, as stated before. All (tomato) baked beans are good baked beans.• Cheese. Beans on Toast without a mountain of grated cheese is frankly, offensive and incomplete. I would suggest a Cheddar so mature that it goes on SAGA holidays. Put it underneath and on top of the beans, so it all melts together.• An obscenely large amount of black pepper. So much that it looks like your pepper mill spontaneously combusted while cooking. I was especially inspired by ‘Portrait of a Gentleman Wearing a Black Tunic and White Ruff’ by Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt (1567 - 1641). In my portrait I wanted the chiarascuro and almost glowing quality of the ruff in the original portrait painting to come across. It is outfitting for a modern ‘hero’ figure; a source of hope and comfort in these confusing times. In Womenswear the trend mainly appears as ‘upgraded’ and reimagined ‘classic’ sillhouettes, such as the trench. They are updated to suit the lives of modern women.In Menswear the trend appears in the actual material of the garments. Using modern technical fabrics to contrast with otherwise ‘classic’ silhouettes. In Visual Merchandising and Interiors the trend takes classic ‘craftsman’ interiors such as wood panelling, and infuses them with ‘loud’ colours and tech. In Graphic Design the trend will be seen in a return to serif font styles, as well as a resurgence of ‘hands-on’ classic design, such as signpainting and physical collage.
